Checks if patient is on anticoagulants, feels dizzy or faints at the site of blood

Checks drug chart and asks patient for any allergies e.g. penicillin

Confirms with the drug chart date, dose and route of the drug and whether it has
 already been administered

Collects equipment (drug, correct size cannula, alcohol swab, tourniquet, 0.9% saline and syringe for flush, sharps bin, cannula dressing, cotton wool, gauze, tape)

Checks expiry, concentration, volume of drug. Confirms dosage with dosing formulary e.g. BNF

Washes hands

Exposes patient’s arm

Applies tourniquet and palpates vein

Cleans site with alcohol wipe, leaves to dry for 30 secs and does not touch this area again

Releases tourniquet and puts on gloves

Inspects cannula to ensure not defective and loosens needle from container

Anchors vein by pulling skin taut

Warns patient before inserting needle at 20 degrees

Looks for flashback and inserts 2-3mm further when seen

Withdraws needle whilst advancing plastic tube

Caps cannula and disposes appropriately in sharps bin

Flushes cannula with saline to assess patency

Applies dressing and writes date

Reconstitutes or draws up drug and confirms dose and drug with another member of staff

Administers via cannula and flushes cannula with saline to ensure the drug has been completely administered

Disposes of waste appropriately in clinical waste bin
